West Central Area survived a five-set match with Rothsay on Saturday in Barrett, winning 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9).

“We’ve had some long games of late and this match was no different,” commented West Central Area Head Coach Missy Foslien.  “The Knights were down two sets to one going into game four, but fought back to capture sets four and five.  Our hitting game was the best it has been all season, with three hitters in double figures.  Our passing game was much improved from our earlier game this week against Underwood.”

Morgan Stark (15 kills, 21 digs, 3 aces), Elizabeth Rustan (13 kills) and Halle Foslien (10 kills, 3 blocks) all registered double digit kills.  Kaitlyn Hansen was the dig leader with 29, followed by Brooke Anderson with 25.  Macy Grosz distributed 27 set assists.  Kennedy Ulrich added 2 service aces.

“We hope to keep improving as we face Parkers Prairie on Tuesday,” concluded Coach Foslien.

Stat leaders for the Tigers were Kenadi Carlsrud (16 kills, 13 digs, 2 blocks), Lilly Wheelright (11 kills), Grace Lider (5 aces, 9 kills), Elli Meyer (25 set assists, 13 digs), Chase Balken (100% serving, 4 aces, 15 set assists, 12 digs), Summer Wigdahl (22 digs) and Madison Tillman (4 kills, 7 digs).

“It was encouraging that we were able to keep our momentum going from our match the previous night,” said Rothsay Head Coach John Reber. “The Tigers started very strong, swinging well and earning a 2 sets to 1 lead. Then the match became more of a grind as it went along, and things started to snowball as the mistakes piled up on both sides, the rallies got longer, and our players ran out of gas at the end. In the last half of set 4 and all of set 5, West Central sent more good swings our way, and our swings were just a few inches off here and there. In a close match that's all it takes.  Both teams played very hard throughout, so it was a fun, if exhausting, afternoon.”
