The Rothsay boys’ basketball team hosted Ashby in a season opening Little Eight Conference matchup on Thursday night.  Ashby controlled most of the first half, pushing the lead to 12 points, but Rothsay battled back and Ashby went into halftime with a 26-23 lead.  The Arrows went on to post a 66-55 win over the Tigers.

“We had balanced scoring with four players reaching double figures,” said Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “Actually, we had five players finish with a career varsity best scoring night.  We held strong for the most part against physical defensive pressure from the Tigers.  We didn’t allow one turnover to lead to another and another.  We made just enough plays and connected on 12-of-13 free throw attempts in the second half to seal the win.”

Brodie Ecker was the game’s leading scorer netting a career high 19 points.  Jake Norby also added a career varsity best 14 points.  Kellen Dahlen and Easton Nelson provided 11 points apiece and Richie Johnson came off the bench to make 8 points.  Bradee Christianson made a three-pointer and Levi Bogenreif and Fred Schlotfeld made significant plays that allowed us to maintain a lead in each half.”

“I thought our boys really competed tonight,” said Rothsay Head Coach Taylor Fuhs. “They played with great effort.  We could definitely tell that for a lot of our guys this was their first real varsity experience.  We continually trimmed the lead to 3 in the second half but could never get over the hump.”

Rothsay was led by Matthew Danielson with 15 points, while Carson Weiers contributed 13 and Karson Jensen 11.

The Tigers will play at Henning on Friday, December 9.

Ashby has a trip to Moorhead on Friday night to face Park Christian School before opening their home schedule against Ortonville on Tuesday night.
