Hillcrest Lutheran Academy scored 16 third quarter points to open up a 30-8 lead over Rothsay on Wednesday night. The Comets went on to defeat the Tigers 30-16. Ethan Swedberg scored 3 touchdowns and Thor Ewan ran for a team high 129 yards on 22 carries, reaching the end zone once.
Hillcrest led 8-0 after one quarter when Swedberg scored on a 3 yard run and added the two-point conversion.
Preston Curtis scored the first Rothsay TD on a 3 yard run and added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8. Swedberg’s 5 yard TD run gave the Comets a 14-8 halftime lead.
In the third quarter Swedberg scored on a 9 yard run and scored the two-point conversion increasing the Comets lead to 22-8. Ewan’s 15 yard rushing touchdown and Swedberg’s two-point conversion run lifted Hillcrest to a 30-8 advantage.
Karson Jensen hauled in a 26 yard pass from Curtis in the fourth quarter and Jensen then carried the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion and a 30-16 final.
Jensen had 125 yards rushing on 29 attempts and Curtis ran for 79 yards on 13 carries. Jensen caught both completions from Curtis for 71 yards. Dawson Leabo led the Tigers with 9 tackles. Carter Davenport recorded 6 tackles and had a sack. Tristan Hofer added 5 tackles and a sack.
Swedberg was 8-for-13 passing for 84 yards. Drew Fischer was his top receiver with 6 catches for 83 yards. Defensively, Griffin Haus and Xander Knutson each had an interception. Ewan led the team with 8 tackles. Haus, Trey Swedenberg and Luke McGuire each added 6 tackles.
Hillcrest will take a 4-4 record into the playoffs on Tuesday.
Rothsay will open the playoffs on the road.
Pairings will be known after seedings are revealed on Thursday.
